♥ Drawing Lesson 1; How to start

9 mei 2019 by Delinlea Leave a Comment

Hey Lovelies! Most of you probably know I love to draw and I often get questions like how I learned it? How do you start? and most often of all, Can you teach me? So I decided to start this series of drawing lessons! Every now and then I will post a blog with drawing tips and or information. I hope you will enjoy!

Please take note that those tips are from my own experience and may be not the best out there. I just want to help you out! And how you can start drawing yourself. But, there’s always a but, drawing takes practice, a lot of practice. You can’t magically draw a portrait perfectly.

How to get started?! Well, get yourself a piece of paper and a pencil. And just start. It doesn’t matter in the beginning what kind of paper/pencil you use. Those can be very cheap, just what you have around. It’s all about the basics first. In this blog I will cover how you can ‘copy’ a photo reference to a sheet of paper. I give several options, it’s up to you what fits you best. There’s no right or wrong in art.

Traditional way

I have no idea how this is called for real, I’m sorry. But what I mean by this one is that you start with drawing and oval/circle and go from there. There are certain rules how to devide the oval and on which lines you draw the eyes, nose, mouth etc. In my eyes this is the most traditional way that is been used the longest. But I am not sure about that. I am not gonna teach you on how to this. Why? Because every face is different, and no face is symmetrical. If you still wanna know how this works, simple google ‘how to draw a face’ and a lot tutorials will come up.

Grid

Using a grid for drawing, is quit populair. I personally never use it, well I did when I was a kid in school, that’s like forever ago haha. But I always see a lot people use it, and I can kinda understand why, it’s just not my thing. That’s the beauty of art, it’s a journey to find your own way and style, where you are comfortable. Gridding for me results in overthinking and making it way to complicated for myself haha.

A grid is usually excisting out of squares. Some people make triangles. Basicly it are lines to help you draw whatever your subject is. You draw them on your reference and on your paper. Most important is that if you use squares on your reference, make sure they are on your paper as well. And the same amount for the part you decide to draw. You can draw your squares on your paper bigger, same size, or smaller, this way you can control how big you want to be your final outcome.

You can draw your grid on the reference by hand, but then you need to print out your picture or use one from a magazine/anything else you don’t mind to draw on. You can also do it in a photo editing program. Try to find what works for you. I did it in Photoshop myself for this tutorial.

Tip 1: Number your squares along the edge of your paper and reference. This will make it easier to find the right square to draw in.
Tip 2: If your paper you wanna draw on isn’t too thick. You can also draw your grid on another sheet of paper with a black marker or so. Put this behind your paper you wanna draw on (eventually with a lightbox). This will save you time to draw the grid over and over.
Tip 3: Draw your grid lightly so you can erase it easily.

Measuring/Lines

After a grid there are also certain lines you can draw on your reference and draw your subject using those lines. It takes less time then drawing a grid all the time. But it’s also something you need to get a feeling for. With lines you can create shapes and measure your drawing points. Those drawing points you copy on your paper and draw the subject with those. You notice, when you draw a portrait, there are certain lines that are almost always the same. It’s not that hard to do, you can draw as many lines as you wanna use and work from there.

Tracing

Here’s a lot of discussion about, a lot people say it’s cheating. But these days even people say you already cheat when you use a reference. I don’t know what going on in the art community. But try to make up your own opinion. That’s why I include this option too.

Tracing is litterally tracing your subject onto your paper. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe this sounds weird if you wanna learn how to draw. But I see it this way, If you draw your subject, that you wanna learn over and over with tracing. You get the feel how the shapes work. This will be saved into your mind/movements and you can draw it neatly without tracing after a while. While, if you keep drawing a shape wrong over and over, it will frustrate in the end.

Free Hand

Free hand a drawing is by far most, the most tricky to do. Why? Because you have no guidelines or what so ever. You just draw what you see. Copy the drawing with your own eyes and hands. For some people this is easy and do it all the time, other people need guidelines to draw well. Whatever it is for you, do it. Don’t let people tell you what’s right or wrong in art. Art = freedom, use it!

About me

For me I learned drawing by free hand. I just did that, some people call that talent. But when you have seen my first drawings, you barely can recognize who it is (pictures below). We all have to start somewhere, don’t give up after the first few tries. Later on I also started to use lines/measuring to get proportions right. Now, I still combine these 2 most of the time, just how I feel, or how complicated the reference is. (For recent works check my Instagram).
I always loved drawing from when I was very young. But drawing portraits, I believe I was 17, I had a dream I could draw portraits, and the next day, was the day I started drawing portraits.
As for Age, it doesn’t matter when you start learning something. It’s never too later or too early to start something. Just do it.

I hope this lesson was helpful to you! And I hope you will start drawing as well! It’s something beautiful to do, to create and control what’s going on that blank sheet of paper. Create and have a wonderful day!

♥ #PolaroidDrawingChallenge Update 2

5 juli 2018 by Delinlea Leave a Comment

Hey Lovelies!

Time for another update of my #PolaroidDrawingChallenge! Well to be honest, there’s not much to say. I missed a lot weeks to draw at least 1 polaroid. But a lot is going on and I really had to take care of myself first, instead of pushing myself, like all the time.

I only got 7 polaroids done for the second quarter of the year, instead of 13… That’s just half of the polaroids that had to be finished. Let’s hope I can make up for these the next 3 months! I feel like I have to! SO, if you have any idea’s for polaroid, LET ME KNOW~~! Haha

I started to practise drawing some animals as well. Specially Owls! They are some of my favorite birds and I almost never draw them >_<. So, I hope I can draw some like furry animals in the future as well! I’m scared of the fur tho, it’s so hard, I tried before and didn’t liked it at all xD good luck to me!

This was my little update! Next week will be a very cute and fluffy crochet project! Look forward to it~~!

♥ #PolaroidDrawingChallenge Update

12 april 2018 by Delinlea Leave a Comment

Hey Lovelies!

This week there will be no DIY! Nuu~~ I hear you haha. But, remember I set a challenge for this year?! My #PolaroidDrawingChallenge?! Well, let’s give you an update how it goes so far. I wasn’t able to do one every week, that happens sometimes. And when I can’t finish one in a certain week, I try to catch up the next week.

Here are all the polaroids I have drawn, from the first 3 months. I love how they look together. So, different from a Single shot. And, Yes, 1 is missing, that one is shipped. (goodbye my loved one xD).

And as you can see in my Bullet Journal Tracker, there are weeks that are still white, and stay white. These are the weeks I missed. But in some weeks you also see a doodle, this means that I have done 2 polaroids that week. ^-^

I love how it is gong so far and I definitely wanna stick to it. I have still 2 polaroids to go that I missed, I need to catch these up. Let’s see what I can do this week.

Have a lovely day everyone!

Love

♥ Caran D’Ache Contest

1 maart 2018 by Delinlea 2 Comments

Hey Lovelies!

Today won’t be a DIY but I will be talking about my experience with a Contest and what I won. haha Okay I already gave it away. But you will get details later~

Back in November last year(!) (that feels ages ago already) Caran D’Ache announced on their instagram that they will hold a contest. And the theme was Super Heroes! Well.. to be honest, I am not really into super heroes. So the struggle started. As they said to create your own super hero, I got excited! Because.. now I could create a drawing that’s close to myself instead of drawing an already excisting super hero, that I don’t really like.

Super Hero

Caran D’Ache created this contest to celebrate the new super hero movie, Justice League. They made some ballpoint pens in order to celebrate. This was what you could win, a full set of Justice League ballpoint pens. And an additional prize will be chosen by one of the 3 CDArtists. So it depended on by who you got chosen as a winner in order to know what the exact prize would be. And as Heather Rooney, a CDArtist, (You should totally check her out!) was one of the judges.. I decided to join. I’ll tell you later why.

Tight Deadline

So the contest was announced nov 3rd, and the deadline was nov 17th. Pretty tight deadline, how to get a full colored drawing done in such a small amount of time, in the like busiest time of the year! I didn’t even had an idea yet of what to draw! aaaa! the frustration was real, I wanted to join so badly but ideas were lacking. So, I asked my brother and sister for some advice, since they do love super heroes. And my brother said ‘you should look up Poison Ivy, but you could use dragons as well in your drawing’. Actually I could do anything, as long as I made up a story. Well, I looked up Poison Ivy and that gave me finally some ideas after days of thinking of the subject.

I searched for some hours for the right reference I wanted to use. (This is the stock photo I used) I always have an idea of the pose I wanna use, but to find that pose in a picture within seconds. That never happened. I lost more time, but I could finally start after the struggle of coming up with an idea.

The Stock photo I used.

The Drawing

I believe I drew the whole drawing within a week. The last day I worked on it.. I pushed through to get it done. Since the next day I had to go to the dentist and that was also deadline day. Well I could tell you, I was so happy I pushed through and got it done before the dentist. Cause when I came back from there, I felt so sick (I’m horrible with anesthesia), I wouldn’t have been able to finish it if I didn’t finished it the night before.

Waiting

I got it up on Instagram, since that was the way to enter. And now the waiting started. There wasn’t a date set for the announcement, so, Yeah wait till there was activity somewhere haha.

On nov 25th the first 3 winners were announced by Heather! And YES I WAS ONE OF THEM! I was so excited! I couldn’t believe it! There were so many good entries! But I was in her top 3. Altough it wasn’t clear if I won something, I thought only the number 1 had won, and I was stated as second. A lot confusion over there. I tried to ask what I won, but nobody replied, until after the weekend. They changed the post and stated all 3 will get a full set of Justice League ballpoint pens and a box of Luminance 6901 colored pencils! YAY! That’s where I did it for! Those pencils.. they are just amazing! But so expensive, I only own 3 at that moment.

After all winners were be announced, 9 in total, Caran D’Ache contacted us privately (about a week past again) and asking us for our address. I gave it and they replied that it could be that we would recieve the goods at the end of December cause of busiest time of the year. All shipping was slow.

Lost hope

Time went by, I waited and waited, but still no package. In the mean time the year ended and new year started and still nothing. In the end I wrote them again, to tell them I still hadn’t reveived my things. And they didn’t reply.. I could see they saw my notice, but nothing back. Now I got really scared.. lost hope that I will ever get what I won. More time went by..

Someone rings the door..

It was the end of January and someone rang the door, my mom opened and I thought it would be a package for my sister. But my mom said it was for me.. I was clueless cause I didn’t expect anything, right?! Then I saw the logo of Caran D’Ache on the package and I got so excited! I couldn’t believe it was finally here! I lost all hope but it is actually here! I immediatly started opening the huge box (it was bigger then expected). And I couldn’t believe my eyes!  IT WAS A FULL SET OF LUMINANCE 9601 COLORED PENCILS and 6 Justice Leagea ballpoint pens. I knew I would get these pens and pencils but I thought I would get a set of 12 Luminance colored pencils haha. It was never stated we would get a full set! Beyond amazing!

Here are some drooling pictures of the box and pens!

I haven’t tried the pencils yet, no time haha. But I hope to find some time soon to try them.. wait.. I wanna do a portrait with them, but who to draw?! *sigh the struggle is real.. every. time. But, I guess, that’s part of the creative process xD. I will let you know when I got the chance to try them!

Love Danielle
